Independents at Auction

A Quick Rundown of all the Independent Lots Available in the 2023 Hong Kong Auctions

A De Bethune DB28XS Stary Seas

The end of the auction season is always punctuated by auctions in Hong Kong, and New York. With the end of Dubai Watch Week, the remaining two watch industry events of the year are these auctions. Taking place on November 24-26, Phillips and Christie’s will have auctions in Hong Kong, and on December 7th Sotheby’s New York Auction will take place, and Phillips on December 9th. Let’s have a closer look at the lots on offer in Hong Kong.

Between the two auction houses, there are 24 F.P. Journe lots, including a 38mm stainless steel set, offered individually, 8 Kari Voutilainen pieces, 7 Richard Mille’s, 5 DeBethune’s,  2 Akrivia and 1 Rexhep Rexhepi pieces, and 3 Philippe Dufour Simplicity, one being the piece unique for the Philippe & Elisabeth Dufour Foundation Charity Auction. That is a lot of pieces. And yes, I did include the Cartier Tortue Monopoussoir Collection Privée Cartier Paris (CPCP), because while Cartier is a huge producer of watches, the movement for this watch was developed by Techniques Horlogéres Appliquées (THA), where F.P. Journe, Denis Flageollet, and Vianney Halter all worked together.

One major change that I see in these auctions, is the rather small volume of Richard Mille. Seven is still a large number, but I feel like in previous auctions this year and before we’ve seen a lot more. I also thought the number of Journe’s available was high, I think we hit peak Journe last year, and I’m not quite sure what’s happening with pricing, but I think we will see a better representation after this auction. I think the “coffin” 38mm stainless steel set will perform well, but I do hope these go to the same bidder, or at least someone makes an effort to keep the set together. I don’t like seeing the cohesive set broken up, but I do understand why you would do that (Phillips Lots 815-820).

It’s an impressive collection of indies that are up for sale, with everything on offer from early independents to modern independents. I am most surprised by the number of  Kari Voutilainen for sale, there are multiple variations of his Vingt-8 for sale in this auction. These 8 watches represent about 10% of his annual production, which is a high number coming up for sale. Unfortunately, I think the availability of so many over the weekend may have an impact on prices achieved for each, but on the other hand some of the unique configurations could sell for over retail because people want to avoid being on this waitlist and want to enjoy the watch now (he’s reportedly sold out multiple times over).

Finally, I want to pay attention to how the Philippe Dufour Simplicity performs. With three available, I think these will be high tickets. I also am curious to see how the bidding goes for the piece unique for the Philippe & Elisabeth Dufour Foundation. Since the proceeds will be helping them launch their foundation, I hope it is a success for the brand. I can’t wait to see how all three sell over the weeknd.

Below is the listing of all the indies that are up for sale with links to the lots, enjoy them and enjoy the auctions in Hong Kong. For all my friends in the United States, have a happy Thanksgiving!
